PHOTOS: Selen Alpay receives B.C. Medal of Good Citizenship in Prince George

Alpay is one of 19 recipients of the provincial award

Selen Alpay is more than just a community member, he's the example of a selfless man with an even bigger heart.

Today (April 27), he was awarded for his efforts with the B.C. Medal of Good Citizenship during a ceremony in Prince George.

Harry Bains, Minister of Labour and Surrey-Newton MLA, presented Aplay with the award and touched on his value in the community.

"Today, we honour a person very important to you and the City of Prince George," Bains said, "because of his contributions to making the community a better place to live and a place where citizens look out for each other."

Selen was then called up by Bains, who placed the medal on his suit. He was also presented with a certificate signed by Premier John Horgan and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Janet Austin.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you're all my friends," Selen said. "I want to think you all for attending and being a part of this very special event. I am truly humbled and honoured to be in your presence this morning. As you all know, it's very difficult for me to receive any kind of acknowledgement and today is no different. Today I have much humility and gratitude for accepting the medal of good citizenship. This honour is not just solely about me and in my opinion, this is about all of us and dedicated to what we all do in our communities. Commissioner Bains, all of the people in this room should get the award."

Mayor Lyn Hall also shared a few words of the exceptional person and role model he is.

"Every time I go to an event, there you are," Hall said, "out of pure interest and wanting to get involved, to better the community."

Prince George has always been a welcoming community, which Alpay says is a large reason why he continues to give back in an impactful way.

"This outstanding community that I have the fortune of living in, accepts me and continues to motivate me to play a role in its success and achievements."
