Fire at Carrie Jane Gray Park

A local walker calls for a ban on smoking in parks after spotting flames

A tree and a large swath of dried grass caught fire at Carrie Gray Jane Park Thursday and Larry Johnson, local walker, came upon the aftermath Friday afternoon.

“I walk in all the parks and I find cigarette butts everywhere,” Johnson said. “The signs in the parks say it is recommended that you don’t smoke but I think they should have an absolute ban on it. There is no evidence that someone lit a fire so my best guess is that someone flicked their cigarette butt and there goes the tree and then the wind blew and sent the fire along the grass."

Johnson said the risk of wildfires in B.C. is high enough without possible carelessness adding to it.

"We don’t want Prince George to turn into another Kelowna, Fort McMurray or Osoyoos," he said. "We all have to keep Prince George safe.”
