Richmond will be well-represented at next week’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Langley thanks to a strong showing at the zone qualifying meet.
The McMath Wildcats’ impressive depth was showcased at Burnaby Central which hosted the Richmond/New West/Burnaby Zone Championships. The Steveston school swept all three divisions — Grade 8, Junior (9-10) and Senior — thanks to excellent balance with as many wins in throws and jumping as their usual strength on the track.
The Wildcats were led by Kajaks club athletes Carson Bradley, Liam McLeod, Selin Tasdemir, Claire Bosma and Alicia Lo. Vicki Wideski was also a force winning the triple jump, shot put and discus events.
The McNeill Ravens continue to demonstrate gains in their program, especially in the boys’ divisions and at the Grade 8 level. Seniors JJ Bachmeier and Enrico Esteban led their school to a strong finish.
Other notables were Josh Woolgar from Richmond Christian with a pair of wins in distance running, and Burnett’s long jumper Eric Che, recovering from an injury that almost kept him out of the meet.
Here’s a rundown of the Richmond winners at the regional meet. The provincials run from May 31 to June 2 at McLeod Stadium.
