Michael Crisologo was one of four players named to the B.C. team headed to the Hogan Cup in Oregon based on a two-year selection process.

Richmond golfer Michael Crisologo has been named to the B.C. team that will be competing at the 50th annual Eddie Hogan Cup — Aug. 11-12 at the Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Oregon.

The Hogan Cup 36-hole team matches the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada against each other in a team format with the three lowest scores each day determining the team total. Awards are presented to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field. It is restricted to boys 18 years of age or younger who have not started college.

Michael is the younger brother of Chris Crisologo who just concluded an outstanding collegiate career at SFU and is a member of Canada’s national amateur team. He is joined by Kelowna’s Cole Wilson, along with Sean Buckles and Zach Ryujin, both from North Vancouver.

The team was selected by a British Columbia Golf selection committee as part of a 2-year development program.

Crisologo finished tied for fourth at last week’s B.C. Junior Boys Championships in Kamloops with a 6-under total.

B.C. has won the Eddie Hogan Cup title twice since 1972, with the first coming in 2009 and then again four years later in 2013 where team member Kevin Vigna also won the individual title.

The team will be coached by Colin Lavers from Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver.

“Our expectations are to contend for the title and I feel that we've got the team to do it. As coach for the second year, I now have a better understanding of everything involved in the event, from the formalities and dinner on the Friday night to the format and level of competition,” said Lavers. “We also have a much better understanding of the golf course and what it will take to shoot the scores necessary to contend. It won't be easy but I know that everyone is prepared to put in the work to be at our best.”

Extra holes…

At the B.C. Junior Girls Championships in Kimberley, Quilchena’s Karen Zhang finished in sixth place with an 11-over total. Sherri Yang from Mayfair Lakes was 11th at 16-over.
