Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed defenceman and Richmond native Troy Stecher to a two-year deal valued at $2.325M (US) per season.

“Troy Stecher is an important part of our team," said Benning. “He's a talented two-way defenceman who competes every shift. Troy has a willingness to always improve his game and is an example of a young player committed to being a professional."

Stecher, 24, recorded one goal and 10 assists (1-10-11) over 68 games played in his second NHL season. He set career highs in penalty minutes (35), hits (110) and blocked shots (75). The defenceman's average time on ice (18:49) and 75 blocked shots each ranked 5th on the team. Stecher recorded a career-high 7 blocked shots in a single game on February 9th, 2018 against the Carolina Hurricanes. In his first NHL season, Stecher recorded 24 points (3-21-24) and was voted Canucks' Best Defenceman, receiving the Walter (Babe) Pratt Award.

In 139 career NHL games over two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, Stecher has collected 35 points (4-31-35) and 60 penalty minutes.

He initially signed with the Canucks as a free agent after a standout career at North Dakota that included winning the NCAA National Championship in his final season. He played his minor hockey with Richmond Minor before spending one season in major midget with Greater Vancouver then making his B.C. Hockey League debut with Penticton when he was just 16.
