They did what was expected of them and exited the “group of death” in the Men’s Open division, on route to the finals, to set the stage for an incredible Nations Cup finals rematch against the formidable foe who beat them in overtime last year.

But it was not to be, once again, for Team India, as it fell short on Sunday to powerhouse Team Italy for a second straight year — this time in regulation, by a score of 1-0.

“Coming into this tournament there was a lot of anticipation and hype” to see this rematch, said Nations Cup President Jeff Wilson.

But the Italians did what they usually do — play sound and smart soccer. They also took advantage of an early red card by the Indians, which handicapped the runner-up for all but 10 minutes of the game.

“There was an end-of-half push from India. They were fairly aggressive coming down the stretch but couldn’t find a way to score,” said Wilson.

Despite the loss, the tournament’s men’s MVP went to Cheta Jhooty.

“He’s played for years. He’s a guy late in his career and it’s been nice to see him put in his time and finish with the MVP,” said Wilson.

India did make waves in senior divisions, winning the Men’s Over 30 and Men’s Over 38 divisions.

“There are some great soccer programs in the Lower Mainland that the Indian community puts together. They take it very seriously,” said Wilson, explaining India’s endearing pedigree at the annual tournament.

This year, Wilson said he was particularly struck by all of the teams competing in the Men’s Over 30 division.

“The level and pace and skill is very high,” said Wilson.

Meanwhile, the Women’s division continued to impress and Wilson noted that year over year the competition between teams increases.

“Ireland and Canada have been the strongholds. There’s a little more parity but obviously Ireland showed its strength again by winning,” noted Wilson.

Caitlyn Davie took home the MVP honours for the women.

Wilson said the weather held up for the entire weekend, adding to the lively atmosphere.

“This year was great and so it created a little better atmosphere with the beer garden and folks camping out on the sidelines,” said Wilson.

Furthermore, he also noted how the tournament atmosphere is seeping into its satellite locations at Manoah Steves elementary and Minoru Park.

“I was struck by its almost own individual atmosphere there (Steves) and the amount of people there for the long haul.”
