A couple of well-known Richmond soccer standouts will be participating in Saturday’s Whitecaps FC Charity Alumni Match at B.C. Place Stadium.
Jason Jordan and Stephen Burns are among the former Vancouver Whitecaps/86ers named to participate in the game.
As part of this year’s Legends andStars theme, alumni from all eras of the club’s 40-plus year history will be joined by a number of special celebrity guests, including Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook/Once Upon A Time) and KJ Apa (Archie Andrews/Riverdale). All proceeds from the match go to B.C. Children’s Hospital.
Jordan starred for the 86ers/Whitecaps during their days in the First Division of the United Soccer Leagues. The Richmond F.C. product is the club’s third all-time leading scorer with 74 goals in 207 games. The 39-year-old is currently technical director for Fusion F.C. of the B.C. Premier Soccer League.
Burns played professionally for the 86ers and Winnipeg Fury after graduating from UBC. The longtime teacher at South Delta Secondary School in Tsawwassen has been coaching soccer in his hometown for years at the youth, senior and high school levels. Recent stints include Richmond F.C. of the Metro Women’s Soccer League premier division and the McMath Wildcats senior girls team. He is also an assistant coach with the Langara Falcons women’s team.
Other former Whitecaps/86ers slated to participate include Jay DeMerit, Paul Dolan, John Catliff and Robert Earnshaw.
The game kicks off at 1:45 p.m. ahead of Vancouver’s MLS match against the Columbus Crew (4 p.m.). To purchase a $5 ticket for the alumni match, fans must also have a ticket for the MLS game. Tickets for both matches can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
