A new farmers market is set to open in Richmond, giving residents a mid-week option to purchase local food and artisan crafts.

The Kwantlen Street Market plans to run every Tuesday evening, starting May 31, at Richmond’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus.

Organizers have created a Facebook page, touting a growing list of participating vendors, such as farmers, bakers, butchers, artists and entertainers.

The market was organized by the Kwantlen Students’ Association and should be a mid-week compliment to the bi-weekly Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market on Moncton Street.

The market has announced a few vendors already, such as Rockweld Farm, which will bring in locally-grown eggs and meat, as well as Goerels, which has been promoting its smoked wild sockeye salmon, of late.

While market attendees can stock up on fresh groceries, food trucks will also be on hand.

Organizers are also planning to offer chefs demonstration and workshop space to promote recipes that utilize local ingredients.

The market is still actively seeking complementary entertainment, such as buskers, musicians, performers and face-painters.

The market opens at 3 p.m. and runs until 7 p.m. in the school’s parking lot on Kwantlen Street.

To entice people to come to the first market, Kwantlen is offering $100 in “market bucks” to a random person who likes and shares the market’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/KwantlenStMkt, by Monday, May 30.

Kwantlen’s Richmond campus is home of the KPU Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems faculty, which will farm about 20 acres of the Garden City Lands for educational purposes, both for the university and the general public.
