Richmond’s Storeys Project, an innovative 129 unit affordable rental housing development, has been given the Social Planning Award in the Canadian Institute of Planners’ Awards for Planning Excellence.
“The jury was excited about the collaborative commitment to making this project a reality,” said CIP on its awards website page, adding that the City of Richmond’s adaptation of its affordable housing policy and long-term lease of the land made the project possible.
“The resulting project is innovative in developing housing in association with a social service hub, including a social purpose café,” CIP added.
Storeys’ provides safe housing for single parent families, those overcoming addiction, seniors formerly at-risk of homelessness and individuals living with mental health concerns. The project has also become a community hub by offering immigrant settlement services, employment skills, affordable meals, social activities and meaningful connections.
CIP’s annual Awards for Planning Excellence highlight planning projects that deserve recognition for their excellence in planning work and their contribution to the profession.
Currently, CIP presents awards in 13 different categories at its annual conference.
