Richmond RCMP investigating pedestrian death

Woman, 54, is city's fourth pedestrian fatality of 2017

Police are warning the public to take extra care on and around Richmond’s roads after the city’s fourth pedestrian fatality of the year.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, Richmond RCMP responded to the 11000 block of Bridgeport Road, between No. 5 and Shell roads, for a serious collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle.

The pedestrian, a 54-year old woman from Richmond, was struck by a gray 2013 Acura SUV, driven by a 59-year old male from Surrey.

The driver of the Acura stayed on scene and attempted to help the stricken. Police say the driver has been cooperating with the investigation.

However, the woman, who was taken to hospital with critical injuries, has since died.

According to police, neither speed, nor alcohol are factors in the fatal collision and the pedestrian didn’t appear to have been crossing in a designated area.

“Richmond RCMP would like to remind all users of our roadways to please exhibit extra caution whether driving, walking, running, or cycling,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“The inclement weather and early darkness can add to an already challenging environment.”
