In celebration of National Family Literacy Week, Richmond Public Library is hosting a series of events to promote the importance of reading as a family.

According to the library, Canadian literacy rates have dropped over the last 10 years and Canadian youth are ranked as “below average” for literacy compared to other countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

The library says its role is to “show families that the path to literacy begins at home with simple activities that parents and their children can do together to improve literacy and develop the love of reading in children.”

From Jan. 21 to Jan. 27, regular library programs such as story times will also include special games and activities that show parents and families how to grow literacy skills at home. Programs on digital literacy will also be available, introducing computer coding and digital tools to participants.
