Richmond Fire-Rescue tackle bus fire at YVR

Unattended bus catches fire on service road

A bus caught fire Thursday morning at Vancouver International Airport, sending plumes of black smoke into the air, but there were no passengers on board at the time.

YVR spokeswoman Robyn McVicker said the engine of a jet set bus, which is used to transport passengers from the parking lot, was parked on the North Service Road when it caught fire shortly before 8 a.m. She said the driver had just finished parking the bus and had walked away when it erupted in flames.

RCMP responded and put out the blaze. Richmond RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Stephanie Ashton said it was a small fire and no police report was filed. It is unknown how much damage was caused to the bus.

There are no reports of injuries and McVicker says there was no impact to airport operations.

Photos posted by News 1130 on Twitter show huge plumes of black smoke in the air above the airport.

McVicker said YVR plans to investigate the incident.
