In the next two months, three concerts performed by Asian musicians are coming to Metro Vancouver, thanks to a Richmond-based music company, VISM. It has hosted more than 50 concerts across North America, including top artists such as the 12 girls’ band, Christine Fan and Fish Liang.
VISM is a music school and stands for Vancouver International School of Music. Owner Jason Li told the Richmond News that the company’s goal is to bring the best Asian music to North America.
The company was founded in 2010 and mainly provided music training. After several years, VISM gained opportunities to build connections with Asian entertainment companies.
“Some companies from Asia approached us to see if we can help host concerts in Vancouver since we understand the music industry in Asia and North America and are more familiar with the local markets,” Li said.
“We also realized that there was no company in North America dedicatedly to host Asian concerts, and most celebrities could only perform at Casinos such as the River Rock.
“Often the shows at casinos only have a couple songs, so technically they cannot be called concerts. Also, many people spend time on gambling and they often miss some parts of the show.” Li added.
Li then started a division in the company called VISM Event, dedicated to hosting Asian concerts. Most of the concerts in Vancouver are performed at the Orpheum and Queen Elizabeth theatre.
One (concert) project often runs in between three to six months, and a big challenge VISM had in the earlier stage was to sell tickets.
“We mainly used tickets selling services such as the Ticketmaster, but we found out the sales were so low,” Li said.
“So, we developed our own website and a mobile application for tickets selling as well as implemented membership strategy to boost the sales. Now we have more than 20,000 members across North America.”
VISM has built a winning reputation in the Asian music industry and continues to host more and more A-listers from Asia. In the next three months, they are hosting concerts for Cantopop band Twins, Natasha Na and Andy Hui.
