To better get a handle on bike thieves, Richmond RCMP is deploying bait bikes alongside cutting-edge bike registration and recovery from Project 529.

Similar to bait cars, bait bikes leverage technology to assist the Richmond RCMP in combatting bike theft.

Specially equipped bikes provide police with real-time monitoring capabilities and greatly assist officers in coordinating a safe recovery of the bike and apprehension of the offender.

There is nothing that would identify a bait bike to a thief and for all intents and purposes, they look identical to a non-bait bike.

Project 529 is fast becoming the best way to register your bike and utilize technology to assist in its recovery should it ever become stolen.

Richmond RCMP was one of the first of RCMP detachments to partner with Project 529 and is now being used by many police agencies in B.C., across Canada and the U.S.

Registration is very simple and can be managed through a smart phone app. You can register at any Community Police Office in Richmond.

“We are always searching for innovative solutions to compliment traditional police techniques,” said Sgt. Simon Lee, of Richmond RCMP.

“Our Property Crime Unit (PCU) is utilizing all means at our disposal to catch bike thieves and hold them accountable.”
