Richmond athletes triumph at Special Olympics Canada Winter Games

Team BC came second at the Calgary event with 135 medals.

Community members holding colourful signs and a B.C. flag were the first thing Richmond Special Olympics athletes saw upon arriving at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

The warm welcome came after the athletes spent the past week competing at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary, held from Feb. 27 to March 2.

Figure skater Matthew Lai won gold and speed skater Nicky Chow scored one silver and two bronze medals.

Team B.C. came second overall during the competition with 135 medals, including 52 gold, 45 silver and 38 bronze.

"Richmond is proud of the athletes and (thanks) to coaches and mission staff who (supported and helped) the team out there," said Vincent Li, Richmond Special Olympics athlete and spokesperson.
