Tools allegedly stolen in a break-and-enter were recovered by Richmond RCMP after they were found for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Police received a report that a number of tools were stolen between 5:30 p.m. on April 15 and 9:20 a.m. on April 16 from a home that was under construction.

Later that day, the owner of the stolen tools said he found them for sale on Facebook Marketplace and was able to identify them "based on specific markings he had put on them."

Richmond's property crime unit searched a residence near Sorenson Crescent and Leslie Road and found the alleged stolen tools as well as items from another Richmond RCMP investigation.

Cpl. Ryan Lee, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit, said they want to make sure they can return stolen items to their rightful owners.

"Keeping a record of serial numbers or adding identifiable marks can assist police in recovering and returning items that have been stolen," said Lee.

"In this case, the owner’s due diligence both in marking his items and searching online sales platforms assisted us in advancing our investigation and recovering not only his property but other people's as well."

Richmond RCMP said no arrests have been made at this time and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
