Former two-time Richmond MVP Abby Zawada ranked fifth all-time in most points by a freshman at the University of the Fraser Valley thanks to her success from beyond the arc.

Abby Zawada has been recognized for her impressive freshman season at the University of the Fraser Valley.

The former McMath standout and two-time Richmond Senior Girls Basketball League MVP was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team. Zawada averaged nearly six points per game in 17 minutes of playing time and ranks fifth in school history for most points in a rookie season.

“Abby had a fantastic year for us,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. “She really added something to our team, with her ability to spread the floor with her shot.

“She had some big games for us, where statistically she did a good job. I’m excited for Abby in the future as she continues to add pieces to her game. I think she has potential to be a great Cascade moving forward.”

Zawada showed why she was a highly-regarded shooter when she took her career to the Abbotsford school.

She smashed the freshman record for most 3-point baskets and attempts in a season — connecting on 31 of 98 shots. That’s 15 more than the previous mark.

Her 31 percent success rate ranks fourth all-time. She also holds down the No. 3, No. 4. No. 6, No. 8 and No. 10 positions for 3-point efficiency by a freshman in a single game.

Zawada’s best outing was a 4-for-5 performance in a pre-season game back in October. She then hit on four of six attempts in a 74-57 loss to UBC.

Zawada and teammate Madison Draayers share the record for most three-points made by a freshman in a single game with five. Zawada did that three times. The pair also share the record for most 3-points attempts in a single game with 14.

Three times Zawada scored a season-high 17 points.

Fraser Valley finished the season 10-14 overall and 10-10 in Canada West Conference play. The Cascades were eliminated from the playoffs after a 80-61 loss to UVic earlier this month.

The UFV roster also features Zawada’s older sister Jessica. Both girls helped McMath reach the B.C. “AAA” title game back in 2016.
