Two-time defending champion McMath and host Steveston-London have a good chance of meeting in Saturday's final at the 11th annual Bob Carkner Memorial Classic.

The Steveston-London Sharks will host 14 other senior girls and boys basketball teams when the Bob Carkner Memorial Classic tips-off on Thursday.

The 11th annual tournament is played in the memory of the former principal who passed away in 2009. He had a tremendous passion for the game and his grassroots youth programs were instrumental in basketball’s emergence in Richmond.

His granddaughter Kate Carkner will be playing for the two-time defending champion McMath Wildcats. Much of her game was developed by her dad Tim Carkner who has been an invaluable volunteer coach with the Richmond Youth Basketball League which is mainly responsible for the surge of young girls hoop talent in the city.

The girls draw will see the host Sharks taking on the North Delta Huskies on Thursday at 2 p.m. while the Wildcats will open against Surrey’s Clayton Heights at 6 p.m. The McRoberts Strikers will also be in action and face John Oliver in their first game at 3 p.m. Burnaby Mountain and Kwantlen Park round out the entries.

The girls’ championship game goes Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

The boys side of the draw features Steveston-London taking on Langley in its opener at noon on Thursday.

Defending champion Lord Byng is matched-up against the Delta Pacers, while the Hugh Boyd Trojans will face Windermere in the opening round. Sands and Alpha round out the teams.

The boys final tips off at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
