At just 14, Richmond's Wesley Chiu has captured silver in the junior men's competition at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Richmond’s Wesley Chiu capped a spectacular debut season at the junior men’s level with a silver medal at the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in Mississauga, ON.

The 14-year-old Connaught Skating Club member finished second to Ontario’s Corey Circelli. Chiu actually led the competition following his short program with a score of 76.12. He then produced a score of 122.32 for his free skate to finish comfortably on the podium — five points behind Circelli and nine ahead of bronze medalist Alec Guinzbourg — also from Ontario.

Earlier, Chiu was second at the Skate Canada Challenge in Edmonton and also captured gold at the BC/Yukon Sectional Championships.

He stepped up to junior men’s this season after winning the Canadian Novice title in 2019.

His competitive schedule also includes a 13th finish back in September at a ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Italy. It was his international debut and more assignments from Skate Canada will be coming.

The Grade 9 student has transferred from Richmond Christian to Magee Secondary for his Grade 9 year ago to enroll in the school’s SPARTS program that provides flexible schedules for elite athletes.
