Bryan Abrey’s globetrotting adventures as an elite level fastpitch player brings him to the Czech Republic as a member of Team Canada at the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championships.

The tournament will feature 16 teams split into two groups with the top four from each advancing to the single elimination playoff round. Games will be played in Prague and Havlíčkův Brod. The semi-finals will take place on June 22 while the bronze and gold medal games are scheduled for June 23.

Abrey, 32, is a national team veteran who is participating in his fourth world championship. He helped Canada win gold in 2015 and bronze two years later. The McMath grad enjoyed a decorated 2018 campaign, earning tournament MVP honours with the New York Gremlins at last summer’s International Softball Congress (ISC) World Championship in Kitchener. That led to him being named Sport B.C.’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year. He also earned the same honours at the Richmond Sports Awards.

Team Canada is coming into the World Championship after winning gold at the Kelowna May Days tournament last month.
Team Canada, who is currently ranked #2 in the world rankings, will compete in Group B along with #4 Australia, #6 United States of America, #8 Venezuela, #11 Denmark, #12 South Africa, #19 Netherlands, and #22 Singapore.
Team Canada’s first game is Friday against Denmark.
