Students from three Richmond schools are headed to Victoria later this week for the BC Secondary Schools Gymnastics Championships.

Delta Gymnastics Society is doing its part for student representation at this week’s BC Secondary Schools Championships in Victoria.

Through the Ladner-based club’s popular high school program, 33 students representing nine Delta and Richmond schools will be making their way to the provincial capital for the two-day competition, starting on Thursday.

The championships will feature approximately 300 student athletes from across the province. Qualification was done through earlier zone meets.

“The provincials are a great event to promote high school gymnastics and expose more students to the sport,” said Tessa Jansen, Delta Gymnastics High School Coordinator. “Along with being able to demonstrate their abilities, athletes really enjoy travel meets.

“They get to bond and spend time as a team, cheer on their friends and learn new skills. These athletes feel a great sense of pride being able to represent their school and possibly bring home a banner.”

Delta schools include South Delta, Delta, Burnsview and Seaquam. Richmond gymnasts come from McNair, Cambie and McRoberts.

Delta Gymnastics high school program is one of the largest in the province with 40 student athletes, ranging from Grades 7 to 12.

These gymnasts have various levels of ability and train anywhere from three to nine hours per week, from September to June. The high school program begins with Level 1 and lets gymnasts advance their skill level through to Level 5, allowing for success at each tier.

The program trains and helps teens to not only compete in gymnastics, but in all sports at a higher level. It develops discipline, focus and accountability in a collaborative and social environment.
