Richmond athletes wrap up great showing at Canada Winter Games

Silver medals won in judo, squash and figure skating

Richmond athletes wrapped up a productive two weeks at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer with silver medals in judo and squash team events.

Ian Ryder added to his earlier individual gold medal by helping BC finish runner-up to Quebec in the Male Team event.

Steveston Judo Club teammate Caleigh Kuramoto capture her second silver by doing the same in the Female Team event after BC lost to Ontario.

In squash, Cindy Cao, Sarah Cao and Quen Ng came ever-so-close to capturing gold in the Female Team event.

BC and Ontario put on quite the show as they split their matches 2-2 and it came down to a tiebreaker for gold.  As outlined in the rules, it starts with games won so the edge went to Ontario 8-7.

Meanwhile, James Toth and Gabriel Tun helped BC reached the gold medal match in the Male Team Event before also losing to Ontario.

In figure skating, Wesley Chiu capped a hectic competitive schedule with a silver in Novice Men’s.

The freshly crowned Canadian champion, who also won an event in Germany, opted to skate brand new programs with more technical difficulty in Red Deer as he prepares for the jump to Junior Men’s next season.

The Games wrapped up on Sunday with Closing Ceremonies, featuring Richmond badminton standout and double gold medalist Wendy Zhang as the BC flag bearer. The Grade 11 Richmond High student won the singles and doubles events.
