Abby Boden and the McMath Wildcats will host the Steveston-London Sharks on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to determine the top seed for the upcoming Richmond Senior Girls Basketball Championships. Neither team has participated in regular league play this season.

It will be a rare occasion on Wednesday night for the McMath Wildcats and Steveston-London Sharks — a Richmond Senior Girls Basketball League game.

The two sides will meet for the first time this season in a game that will decide the top two seeds for the upcoming Richmond Championships. Both were kept off the regular season schedule to avoid lopsided outcomes that have been all too frequent in senior girls city play for several years.

The Wildcats are six-time defending Richmond champions and have not lost to a local school during that stretch. They have been a fixture in the top five of the provincial 3A rankings all season.

The Sharks will be looking to qualify for their first provincial tournament in recent memory with a core that won the Grade 9 BC title two years ago.

Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at McMath.

The city championships will run from Feb. 4-6 at RC Palmer.

The Wildcats will also be hosting the inaugural South Fraser 3A Zone Championships — Feb. 12-15. That will feature the top teams from Richmond, Surrey and Delta battling for provincial berths.

As for the rest of the Richmond League, the Hugh Boyd Trojans have been setting the pace with a 6-0 record. They will be competing in the South Fraser 2A Championships where they are expected to be joined by Palmer.
