A 4-3 win over Kitsilano on Thursday means the championship trophy will remain at McMath Secondary forever. It was the last edition of the Vancouver and District girls soccer playoffs with Richmond schools headed to the new Fraser South Zone next season.

The McMath Wildcats are headed back to the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships later this month after capturing the final edition of the Vancouver and District playoffs.

The Wildcats trimmed Vancouver champion Kitsilano Blue Demons 4-3 on at Minoru Park on goals by Jaya Punia, Morgan Game, Madison Elcombe and Teagan Ng. Both teams advance to the provincials, slated for May 29-31 at Cloverdale Athletic Park.

Thursday’s win marked the final time the Wildcats will see Vancouver schools on their road to provincial qualifying.

Next year they will be in the new Fraser South Zone as part of B.C. School Sports’ zone expansion for the 2019-20 school year. Richmond teams will now contend with schools from Surrey and Delta.

McMath defeated Steveston-London 5-0 to win Richmond’s No. 1 AAA seed. The Wildcats then got past Churchill 5-2 in the district semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the McRoberts Strikers are headed to the B.C. AA Championships after defeating Hugh Boyd 3-1 on Wednesday in the third place game in the AA district playoffs.

The result avenged a 2-1 defeat a week earlier in the Richmond AA final.

The Strikers got past Point Grey (3-0) in the quarter-finals before being edged 1-0 by Notre Dame. The Trojans fell 2-0 to eventual champion Crofton House in their semi-final game.

The B.C. AA Championships May 30-June 1 in Campbell River.
