Lin captures bronze at Canada Winter Games

Hailey Takasaski among top scorers on BC's ringette team in Red Deer

Richmond’s David Lin has captured bronze at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

The Grade 12 Steveston-London Secondary student combined with North Vancouver’s Steven Wang and Burnaby’s Kenny Jiang to reach the podium on Monday in the team event. BC swept Manitoba in the third place match after being edged in five games by Ontario in the semi-finals.

Lin could be adding another medal on Thursday when he takes on Quebec’s Tommy Xu for bronze in singles.

He is among 18 Richmond athletes competing at the Games in 21 different sports against team’s from Canada’s 13 province’s and territories. The Games continue through Saturday, March 2.

Other local athletes in action during the first week include Hailey Takasaki who has helped B.C. to a 3-2 record so far in ringette. B.C. went 2-2 in round-robin play to finish third in its pool group then opened the playoff round wth a 4-3 win over New Brunswick on Wednesday afternoon. 

Takasaki had a goal and an assist and the B.C. Thunder rookie is one of her team’s top scorers in the tournament thus far.

B.C. will now play Ontario in the semi-finals on Thursday night.

“Going into the next game we will stay focused, rely on each other and know each other’s role on the team. And take some deep breaths” said Takasaki.

In men’s hockey, Michael Abgrall is a member of the B.C. team that was slated to face Quebec in quarter-final action on Wednesday night. 

Other week one events include: gymnastics, artistic swimming, freestyle skiing, speed skating, biathlon, boxing and wheelchair basketball.

Week two features alpine skiing, archery, badminton, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, women’s hockey, judo, snowboard and squash.
