It’s a breakthrough at last for the McMath Wildcats at the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships.

After years of heartbreak, the Steveston school has advanced to the final four of the 16-team tournament thanks to a perfect 3-0-0 run in pool play. The Wildcats clinched top spot in their group with a 2-0 win over Handsworth this morning in Cloverdale. That sets the stage for this afternoon’s semi-final tilt against defending champion Centennial.

Regardless, of that result, McMath will be playing for their first medal on Friday since finishing third at the 2008 tournament.

The Richmond champions had gone unbeaten in four of the last five tournaments, only to lose out on tiebreakers for top spot in their group. Only the first place pool finisher stays in championship contention.

McMath had opened the tournament Wednesday with wins over Claremont (2-0) and South Delta (1-0).

The semi-final is a rematch of a year ago with the teams battled to a scoreless draw but the Centaurs defeated the Wildcats in penalty kicks to advance to the semis and ultimately win the title.
