City boys soccer playoffs start Tuesday

Wildcats, Marlins and Strikers head into post-season as top seeds

Richmond Senior Boys Soccer playoffs start Tuesday with the defending tier champions being among teams to beat.

The McMath Wildcats will be looking to cap off another dominating run in city play when they face the winner of Richmond Colts/Steveston London Sharks in Thursday’s “AAA” title game. The Wildcats went 9-0-0 in regular season play — scoring 46 goals and surrendering just four.

The Sharks and Colts earned their semi-final berths with respective 5-4-0 and 4-3-2 records. The lone meeting back on Oct. 2 saw the Sharks prevail 3-1.

Meanwhile, the McNair Marlins and defending champion McRoberts Strikers are the favourites in the “AA” playdowns. The teams finished tied in the league standings with the Marlins getting the nod for second place thanks to a 2-0 win over the Strikers (6-3-0) earlier in the month.

McRoberts rebounded from that loss to close out their schedule with four straight wins.

The Marlins will take on the MacNeill Ravens in the semi-finals on Tuesday, while the Strikers will meet Hugh Boyd. Both matches kickoff at 3:30 p.m. at Boyd.

Thursday’s tier finals also take place at Boyd at 3:30 p.m.

The top three teams from each tier move on to face Vancouver schools in district playdowns for provincial tournament berths.
