The 2009 Richmond Islanders fastpitch team capped off a great weekend by capturing gold at the U10 Richmond Tournament.
Having only formed the team in early May, coaches Greg Dee, Adam Cyr, Rob Thompson and Nav Sekhon are extremely proud of the players and how quickly they developed and improved, which culminated in a strong performance this past weekend.
In its first tournament of the season, the Islanders started slowly losing their first two round robin games each by a single run, however, as the tournament went along, their play improved. They won the next two games with a combined score of 30-15 which evened their round robin record to 2-2 and to earn the No. 6 seed for the playoff round.
The Islanders played the North Shore Stars in the semi-finals in a closely contested match. Richmond started slowly allowing the first three batters to score and trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the third inning. At that point in the game, the offence came to life, scoring the next four runs.
Pitcher Sienna Parker finished the game for the Islanders by allowing only one run while striking out seven batters in three innings of work and securing the 6-5 victory.
In the gold medal game, the Islanders faced the Tri City Titans.
Looking for some payback against one of the teams they lost to in the round robin games, the Islanders got off to a strong start scoring five runs in the first inning for a 5-2 lead and never looked back.
Offensively, Adelise Cyr, who went 2-for-3 with a single and a homerun, and Katie Nevins, Kaiya Tien and Adrianna Jeske each scoring at least two runs in the 13-6 victory.
Starting pitcher Sofia Sekhon pitched three strong innings allowing only two runs, while striking out seven batters.
The Islanders also feature: Carrington Brown, Doris Zhang, Emma Sierecki and Milah Thompson.
