Dear Editor,

Re: “Health crises not all equal,” Voices, April 16.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and to add on to your “Health crises not equal,” article, it’s worth noting that this pandemic has resulted in abrupt societal change and yet ecological disruption from climate change is just around the corner.

However strong our economy and society seems, even with its shortfalls in dealing with the opioid crisis, it is a case of smoke and mirrors.

We urgently need to build a heartier world. With the coronavirus we’ve seen that entire societies are susceptible to getting sick, making even more obvious the underlying conditions of inequality and ecological turmoil.

As a proud Canadian who wants to see future generations benefit from a healthy environment and the same opportunities I had, I agree that fairness is what we now need most if we are to rebuild towards a world that is more resilient.

For a green renovation wave to happen, we need to ensure that everyone in Canada has the human right to live in a healthy environment.

Therefore, I encourage readers in Richmond to contact their member of Parliament and ask them to support  amending the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

This will help open the door to legislation such as a Green New Deal for Canada which promotes and advocates for equality.

It’s time to start rebuilding our future.
