Roidon Lamb is not happy about council spending $19 million to rebuild the Phoenix Net Loft.

Dear Editor,

Re: “$19M to rebuild Net Loft,” News, Feb. 20.

Having read with jaw-dropping disbelief that Richmond City Council has approved spending $19 million to remove and reconstruct the Net Loft building in Steveston, it just drives home that our city planners and council have little grasp on the value of a dollar. It’s like kids guarding the candy jar.

Regarding talk of making a museum.....you do not place a museum on pilings over water. The humidity and dampness will destroy everything over time.

This project should have been put out for public discussion and opinion. Besides, the existing buildings at Britannia, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and the little museum in Steveston tell the story of this area very well.

No, we are going to spend this exorbitant amount for a building that will be new and look totally out of place, and sit virtually empty 80 per cent of the year.

And whilst reading on in the paper, council members are off to our sister city in Quebec this summer to open a garden to the tune of $17,000, and Harold Steves and friends are once again off to Japan to secure the visit of a Japanese tall ship. These little trips will be costing the taxpayers nearly $60,000. Here’s just one thought, save a little money — fly economy class, just like the people who pay your salaries do.
