I couldn’t help but notice that there were conflicting messages from some of our city councillors in the Nov. 14 edition of the News. On page 9, Carol Day, Michael Wolfe and Kelly Greene were telling “the People of Richmond” that they are hard at work promoting affordable housing.
On page 11, it is reported that those same councillors voted against an application for two duplexes at Williams and No. 2 Road. Ms. Day went so far as to say that the addition of three housing units would cause “traffic gridlock” in the area.
I can’t imagine anyone would even notice the addition of six more cars on these busy arterial streets. The only hope we have of providing housing that is somewhat affordable is with this kind of modest increase in density. I want my grandkids to be able to eventually purchase a home here in Richmond. This type of development is what will give them a chance to do so.
So, Carol and friends, if not here, where? Or do you want to see Richmond filled with massive “McMansions” only the wealthy can afford?
It was good to see that the other councillors and the mayor didn’t join in denying our kids a chance at buying a home here, at least they understand that modest increases in density are the way we create that opportunity.
