Dear Editor,

Re: “New clubhouse slated for Richmond lawnbowlers,” online, May 28.

Our non-profit is trying to help the City of Richmond with pet and feral rabbit control. We’re finding little to no support from council, even though our work will prevent the ever-increasing property damage, not to mention the stress to the citizens faced with constant visions of sick, injured and dead adult and baby rabbits.

Yet, city council has voted to spend $5-million on a lawn bowling clubhouse that caters to very few citizens.

Making it even more ridiculous is the fact the club is in an area with a burgeoning population of burrowing rabbits who will ensure annual maintenance will cost in the thousands of dollars, in addition to the $5 million, because council was too short-sighted to allot a fraction of that budget towards rabbit control.

Also, a reminder that the dilapidated city animal shelter is still waiting for a replacement. It would cost not much more than that $5million figure, and it serves the entire community.
