Letter: Richmond animal lovers should say ‘no’ to puppy mills

Dear Readers, This is Su and Marfa from Samuel Brighouse elementary school in Richmond. We are writing this letter for readers to learn how puppy mills are cruel to puppies. Puppy mills are places where people breed puppies and sell them.

Dear Readers,

This is Su and Marfa from Samuel Brighouse elementary school in Richmond. We are writing this letter for readers to learn how puppy mills are cruel to puppies.

Puppy mills are places where people breed puppies and sell them. Did you know that puppies are kept in small cages with no room to run or play?

Mother dogs are forced to keep making babies, so they can get really stressed. Mother dogs don’t get treated nicely and can die because of sickness, dirtiness and more.

Because of puppy mills, there is overpopulation and shelters have to kill puppies because they can’t take care of all puppy mills. People who own puppy mills only think about themselves.

People sell dog breeds for an expensive price. So please don’t buy dogs from puppy mills.

Instead, adopt pets from shelters like the SPCA (or Richmond Animal Protection Society RAPS.)

There are around 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S. and probably as many in Canada. Imagine that you were a puppy from a puppy mill, how would you feel?

So PLEASE stop puppy mills and make a difference. Every person can make a difference by:

1) Only adopting your dogs from a shelter.

2) If you have a family member(s) that owns a puppy mill, tell them to stop.

3) Don’t buy a dog from websites like Craigslist.

Su and Marfa
