Letter: Replacing straws is step in right direction

Dear Editor,

Banning single-use plastic straws and bags is a step in the right direction. But please, Richmond, don’t dawdle. Sometimes going cold turkey leads to the best results.

Glass straws can substitute plastic straws and they’re available straight and bent.

To replace plastic shopping bags, cut up the legs of old jeans, sew the bottom together, add handles, and you’ve got a sturdier carrier bag than plastic ever was.

As for recycling all that plastic, soft and flexible, to keep it out of the landfill — just what is it actually being recycled into?
