Letter: Hear, hear on bus backfire in Richmond

Dear Editor, Re: “Bus bonus backfires in Richmond,” Letters, Sept. 13 I was really pleased to see a letter about this.

This screengrab from Stanley Hsu’s ‘dashcam’ video shows the transit bus about to cut him off as the cycle lane disappears briefly, while heading south on Garden City Road, between Sea Island Way and Bridgeport Road. Hsu has been cycling from his Richmond home to work in Vancouver for years in the summer months, until this week, which is Bike to Work Week.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Bus bonus backfires in Richmond,” Letters, Sept. 13

I was really pleased to see a letter about this. It basically summed up everything I’ve been complaining about for the past couple weeks to anyone who’d listen to me!

I used to take the 410 to work every day from Railway Avenue to Cambie Road. Yes, it was sometimes late, but I was still able to check what time it was coming, and plan when I had to leave accordingly.

Now I have to transfer to the 410 just minutes after getting on the bus. I can’t predict how long I’ll have to wait to transfer, so it makes it hard to get to work on time. I now have to leave significantly earlier every single day to deal with these changes.

It seems TransLink didn’t think about all the people the split would affect. In my opinion, it was a very near-sighted decision. Putting in an express bus on the route, or alternating between Richmond Centre and 22 St. Station busses would have fixed the delay problem, without hurting others.

Thanks to Ju Cheng for starting the petition about this (https://www.change.org/p/translink-richmond-410-bus-split-reform). I signed it in a heartbeat!
