Richmond is once again asking local artists to submit their designs for decorative street banners that hang from street lights around the city.

Winners of the 26th annual Street Banner Contest will have their work displayed for a year starting in February 2019 and receive a $300 honorarium.

The artwork should celebrate Richmond’s diversity, landscapes and unique experiences. The city is looking for submissions centering on 10 possible themes:

• Transportation
• Island city
• Arts
• Culture
• Heritage
• Urban farming
• Active living
• Waterfront
• Nature

Ten winning designs will be chosen each will be made into 100 vertical banners. While a volunteer judging panel will choose 20 semi-finalists, the winners will be chosen based on a popular vote. Residents can vote by liking the design on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page.

The idea behind the contest is to get citizens engaged in the beautification of the city.

In February, amateur photographer Eugene Hernandez had three of his photographs chosen for the last street banner contest. Another design mimicked lights at a busy intersection, evoking the idea of a bustling city.
Designs can be submitted by mail or online at Richmond.ca/banners. Submissions will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced in early 2019.
