Two Richmond-based seniors’ care homes will receive provincial funding to purchase new equipment, thanks to the Seniors Safety and Quality Improvement Program.

Announced last Friday, Richmond’s Fraserview Retirement Community and Rosewood Manor are two of 88 care facilities that will receive funding for new items such as beds and mattresses, shower chairs and tubs, mobility equipment including as floor and ceiling lifts, lighting and visual aids, sensory rooms, music therapy and ergonomic furniture, including specialized chairs and tables.

"Dignity, comfort and security are what people and their loved ones expect and deserve when they are in residential care," said Adrian Dix, health minister, in a press release.

"Government is investing in these long-term care homes by adding new and replacement items, like beds and mattresses and ceiling lifts and sensory rooms, so people can feel comfortable in their surroundings and enjoy their home-like setting."

The Seniors Safety and Quality Improvement Program is managed by the BC Care Providers Association and enables long-term care providers to apply for funding. Those who were approved for funding may receive up to $500 for each publicly funded bed to purchase new equipment. A total of $2.6 million of provincial funding has been allocated for this purpose.

"BCCPA is extremely pleased to see these dollars invested into strengthening the delivery of seniors care," said Daniel Fontaine, BCCPA’s CEO.

"With our partners in the Ministry of Health, we have established a simple and fair system to make sure all publicly funded long-term care providers can purchase new equipment that will improve safety and quality of life for B.C. seniors."

A second round of funding applications for seniors’ care homes will open at the end of the month.
