Richmond pup owner warns of poisonous mushrooms in park

Suspect fungi found in a field next to elementary school

A dog owner has issued a warning after his eight-week-old pup ingested a poisonous mushroom at a Richmond park.

Ross Burden said he was walking his little Boston terrier Callie, on leash, at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the grass field adjacent to Westwind elementary in Steveston.

During the walk, he noticed that his pup may have nibbled on a mushroom and he immediately finger swept her mouth and removed a small piece of it.

Burden said he carried on with the day, as normal, until Callie started to act weird about three hours later.

“I was watching her move around and, for brief second, she lost control of her rear legs,” he told the Richmond News via Facebook.

“She quickly became unstable on her feet and I rushed her to a local vet arriving 10 minutes later.”

The vet, said Burden, treated Callie for poisoning and induced her to vomit with charcoal treatment, administered a drip and kept her in overnight.

By 2 p.m. the next day she had regained some strength and her blood tests came back showing her kidneys and liver functioning normally.

“We brought her home that afternoon and she ate and slept herself back to a full recovery two days later.”

“Although I considered myself to be keeping her on a short leash to begin with, it was not good enough. I will be even more aware than before,” he added.
