Fifty-five violation tickets for distracted driving were issued by Richmond RCMP during the space of a few hours in the city centre last week.

A 28-strong team of Mounties, auxiliary constables and RCMP volunteers – the latter of which were positioned early in the vicinity, to give drivers fair warning to get off their phones.

The areas targeted during the day were: No. 3 Road and Alderbridge Way; Garden City Road and Alderbridge Way; Garden City Road and Westminster Highway; Garden City and Cambie roads.

While vehicles were lined up at red lights at the intersections, officers could be seen wandering through the traffic, looking for drivers using their phones, even while stationary.
