Two Richmond events are receiving thousands of dollars in provincial funding, thanks to B.C.’s Tourism Events Program.
Next year’s Richmond-based Canada Open Taekwondo Championships and Lunar New Year Festival have received marketing grants to help draw visitors from outside the province.
"British Columbians have created events and festivals which deliver world-class entertainment for visitors and locals alike," said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture in a press release.
"Our government is supporting communities and local tourism by providing important funding that will help make these events even more successful.”
The Canada Open Taekwondo Championships received $10,500, while the Lunar New Year Festival received $10,000.
“This funding will help attract even more people to enjoy the great experiences our province offers,” Beare said.
B.C.’s tourism industry employs more than 133,000 people and is one of the province’s biggest employers. Over $123 million is invested by the province in the tourism industry each year.
Previously, Richmond’s Women’s Volleyball World Grand Prix, 7th Karate-do Goju-kai Global Championships, 2018 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament and 2018 Canadian Gymnaestrada received funding through the Tourism Events Program.
