New Steveston Harbour Authority archway is being built

Construction of a new archway in Steveston has caught the attention of many residents and visitors in the area.

The soon-to-be Steveston Harbour Authority (SHA) archway sign, located at 6th Avenue near Chatham Street, has taken shape and appears to be almost complete.

City council approved a funding of $50,000, from its community initiatives fund, for the sign on Dec. 9 of last year, while the remaining cost was provided by the SHA and the Musqueam Indian Band.

According to Clay Adams, city spokesperson, the archway sign aims to commemorate the importance of fishing and the fishing industry in the community’s history.

A previous proposal from the SHA states that the archway sign intends to “produce a collaborative and positive project that reflects the interlocking relationships between governments, industry, the public and First Nations in Steveston” as well as a “stamp” for the site for fishing-related development.

The structure is part of the harbor authority’s project towards revitalizing Steveston’s fishing industry, whose goal is to spread over the Gulf Site and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
