MP Alice Wong congratulates Richmond’s Sharing Farm on new federal grant

Richmond MP Alice Wong arrived on the Sharing Farm with a bright smile on her face to congratulate its members on securing a New Horizons grant.

The grant will ensure the farm can maintain its Active Seniors Living program, said Sarah Drewery, the farm’s executive director.

The four-acre farm, located in Terra Nova Rural Park, grows more than a thousand pounds of fruits and vegetables each year to support community meals and the food bank.

That, in large part, is thanks to Richmond seniors, who make up the bulk of the farm’s volunteers during the work week. They work for a couple of hours, are provided a light lunch and are transported to City Centre.

But Wong, the Conservative MP for Richmond Centre, notes that “(the Sharing Farm) really serves the whole community, and not just a certain age.”

“Urbanization is good in one way, but on the other hand, we still need to see the nature, to educate the younger generation; it’s also a great place for seniors to learn and volunteer.”

The seniors program is one of many programs offered at the farm, Drewery said.

Wong encourages other organizations to learn about the grant and apply for it.

“If you don’t apply, you’ll never get it.”
