Three Richmond students have been awarded top awards from the Girl Guides of Canada this year.

McMath students Carleigh Goldberg, Alexandria Semple and Annabella Semple have each received an award highlighting their achievements as junior leaders in the Second Sparks unit of the Girl Guides of Canada in Richmond.

Carleigh and Alexandria received the Canada Cord Award, which recognizes leaders for being well-rounded in their volunteer work, leadership, citizenship and first aid.

Alexandria told the Richmond News that she and Carleigh had spent a lot of time completing the requirements for the award.

“I felt accomplished and proud when I found out we completed everything,” said Alexandria.

Carleigh, who was originally aiming for her Lady Baden Powell Award, said she was surprised and happy when she received the news of her receiving the Canada Cord Award instead.

Both Carleigh and Alexandria plan on returning as a unit helper in the upcoming fall and look forward to being life-long members of the Girl Guides of Canada to continue meeting new friends and leading their own groups.

Meanwhile, Annabella Semple has received her Bronze Trailblazer Award – an award not many first-year rangers receive.

Annabella who was also very “thankful” to receive the Bronze Trailblazer award said she appreciated the opportunities given to her by her leaders.

“I am specifically thankful to the leaders of the Second Sparks for giving me the opportunity to plan and run so many meetings and for supporting me when I needed assistance,” said Annabella.

The silver and gold levels of the Trailblazer awards are on her bucket list in the upcoming years, as is participating in more community service opportunities.
