Man fighting for life in hospital after Richmond shooting

Police say 9 a.m. incident on Mitchell Island is likely targeted

A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after shots were fired Tuesday morning on Mitchell Island in Richmond.

Richmond Mounties are asking for witnesses and information after they were called to the industrial area of the island at about 9 a.m.

Police responded to reports of a man shot at a training facility in the 11000-block of Twigg Place, where a witness reported seeing a man dressed in black fleeing the area on foot.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the 25-year-old suffering from serious, potentially life threatening injuries.  He has been taken to hospital and is receiving treatment.

A short time later, Richmond RCMP received a report of a vehicle on fire in the 5600-block of No. 7 Road.

At this time police cannot confirm whether the shooting and vehicle fire are related, however the shooting is not believed to a random incident.

The Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit, with support from the Integrated Forensic Identification Service and Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service and Richmond RCMP, have contained both scenes and are in the evidence-gathering phase.

“At this point, we are asking anyone who may have been a witness to either of these incidents and have not already spoken with police, to contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212,” said BC RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Janelle Shoihet.
