Well, there won’t be any engines but the fifth annual Soap Box Derby in Tsawwassen will be a whole lot of fun.

Council on Monday will consider a staff recommendation to once again host the event, a partnership with the Tsawwassen Rotary.

It will take place June 13th on 6th Avenue.

In 2015, the Rotary first approached Delta to partner in hosting the inaugural derby in 2016.

Delta’s involvement includes staffing support from the parks, recreation and culture, as well as the engineering, fire and police departments.

For the 2020 derby, the Rotary is also requesting use of Delta’s bleachers.

The event will require a full road closure on the avenue from Milsom Wynd to Spetifore Crescent, from 7:30 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m.

The event model involves a focus on community sponsors purchasing carts and arranging for a driver.

Delta and Rotary anticipate up to 60 carts to be driven by local children this year.

It’s a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen with funding benefiting community projects in South Delta.
