Police asked public to avoid the area near No 2 and Blundell roads Wednesday while they investigated a domestic disturbance with a possible weapon.

Officers, some armed with rifles, and police dogs responded to the residence in the 8000 block of No 2 Road, and the neighbouring Blundell Elementary School was put on hold-and-secure.

After a tense hour-long standoff, a 29-year-old man surrendered to police and was arrested.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang said police are waiting on a search warrant to confirm whether the man had a weapon.

Officers also recovered a baby from inside the home. The infant wasn’t hurt.

“The safety of our community and our officers is always of paramount concern in situations such as this. Although we prepare for worst, we are very pleased to report that no one was injured,” he said.

He also praised his fellow officers for their poise under pressure in diffusing the situation.

Some officers will remain nearby as the investigation continues, but the public no longer needs to avoid the area.

The results of the initial investigation will be submitted to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges, Hwang said.
