Hamilton Village Care Centre has opened its doors to 135 long-term residents.

A new long-term care facility has opened its doors in east Richmond with gradual entry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four years after being announced, Hamilton Village Care Centre, a three-storey wood-framed building, opened with 135 long-term spaces for seniors.

The care home, which was built and will be operated by Trellis Seniors Services, is designed on a “small-house” model, with individual rooms with ensuite washrooms and dining areas.

“The modern, small-house design of Hamilton Village Care Centre will improve the quality of life for its residents,” said Mary Ackenhusen, who is just stepping down as president and CEO of VCH. “We’re proud to be innovating for an improved resident experience and better outcomes for seniors in our region.”

Because of COVID-19 infection prevention and control measures in place, residents have been moving in slowly, no more than two per day.

The new residents are arriving from acute care, other non-outbreak long-term care facilities, as well as those from the community. They are being initially quarantined for 14 days and screened for symptoms of COVID-19.

“These are extraordinary times for families in Richmond and everywhere,” said Mary McDougall, president of Trellis. “We are happy to help ease some of the worry by providing safe care for seniors.”
