The City of Richmond is still investigating what led up to a bull terrier-type dog running into someone’s home and mauling the family pet to death.

According to Global TV, the attack took place around 5 p.m. on Friday on Keefer Avenue – close to Ash Street and Blundell Road – when Gary Lok’s 13-year-old maltipoo called Brandy was outside his front door, awaiting the arrival of a relative.

Brandy apparently barked at a “massive” dog that was walking past the property on its own, prompting the larger dog to charge at Lok’s pet.

Inside the home, Brandy was caught by the invading dog – which resembled a bull terrier breed on Lok’s CCTV footage from the front entrance – and mauled around its face.

Another of Lok’s relatives, according to Global, who was looking after a four-year-old child at the time, tried unsuccessfully to get the bigger dog off Brandy.

It was only when Lok’s niece, who had just arrived by car, entered the home and kicked the dog several times in the head did it release Brandy, who was rushed to a local vet, but was unable to be saved.

Lok’s security footage shows the dog chasing Brandy indoors then leaving a few moments later.

After tracking down the dog and then its owner by Sunday, the City of Richmond said the dog was voluntarily surrendered.

“We are still investigating the incident and reviewing further actions,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

He said no decision has been made on what will happen next, including the possibility of the dog being put down.

Townsend added that there are a number of steps to conclude, including determining what triggered the incident, a behavioural assessment of the dog and other reviews.

“There’s no timeline for completion of this process at this time.”

The attack was reported to the police, but Richmond RCMP said the incident is not a police matter.
