Thousands of Metro Vancouverites are expected to trade in their four wheels for two this week, as Bike to Work Week kicks off.

Running from May 27 to June 2, the semi-annual event encourages commuters to cycle to work, school or while running errands in an effort to reduce congestion and pollution and to boost health and workplace comradery across the region.

"Cycling is a more affordable way to commute to work or school, and it helps people keep active in their everyday lives. By cycling instead of driving, we can relieve traffic congestion and help reduce pollution in our communities,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation in a statement.

In Richmond, there will be a Celebration Station set up at near the Canada Line Bridge (River Drive and Van Horne Way) on Tuesday, May 28 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Free snacks, coffee and bike maintenance will all be available.

"Our government has a renewed focus on protecting our environment, while making life better for people. Recently, we introduced the CleanBC plan that sets us on the path to a more sustainable future,” Trevena said.

"Under CleanBC, we are exploring ways to make cycling, walking, skateboarding and other modes of active transportation easier for people of all ages and abilities. We have been engaging with people in communities around the province and hearing great ideas on how to do this. We will be rolling out the active transportation strategy soon.”

The event will return again in the fall, from Oct. 21 to 27.
