Delta police are issuing a reminder to motorists to ensure their vehicles are clear of snow and ice following a close call between a car and a young pedestrian last week in Tsawwassen.

According to DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf, a driver was ticketed and fined after striking a 10-year-old child that was crossing the street all because the drivers’ front window was obstructed with frost.

Leykauf said the incident occurred on Jan. 16 around 8:45 a.m. on 16th Ave.

“The driver in question was travelling westbound on 16th, while a driver travelling eastbound on 16th had stopped to allow a child to cross the crosswalk and unfortunately the driver going westbound had their window obstructed by frost,” said Leykauf. “Officers, when they arrived on scene, they noted that the windshield was frosted over, and the driver could not see well out of the vehicle and struck the child.”
Leykauf said the child was shaken up and bruised, but sustained no serious injuries.

“I’m not sure what is going through people’s minds. Perhaps they are thinking this is a small quiet street and I’m sure the window will be defrosted and clear by the time I hit the highway,” said Leykauf. “Before you leave your driveway or your residence make sure all your windows are either scraped, defrosted or cleared of snow because you absolutely near to see, particularly in front of you, when you are driving a vehicle that could seriously hurt or kill someone.”
